My photography

I try to capture mood and atmosphere in my photography. If it works its great. But there is no guarantee a photo session will produce anything useful.

Like all art, sometimes things come together and an image is special. Sometimes an image is ok, and maybe sucessful in a commmercial way, but doesn’t excite. Most out-of-camera images are quickly and unceremonially deleted.

For me a sucessful image is one which is valued by a designer and chosen to be the starting point of book design.

If the image is pleasing in its own right, then so much the better.

If only we could look into the mind of the designer! It makes their job easier if images are simple and uncluttered. Bright images are easier to work with and manipulate: it is easier to tone down a bright image than to tone up a dark one. Colour is usually better than monochrome – then the desinger can choose. And dont forget the space for text. This can mean your images appear unbalanced and airy: that’s fine, they will look great when the text is overlaid.
